Cara Michell
Cara Michell is an artist and Assistant Professor of Race & Social Justice in the Built Environment at Northeastern University's School of Architecture and School of Public Policy & Urban Affairs. Outside of her teaching and academic research, Cara is the founder of s l o w p r a c t i c e, an urban planning and public art studio that prioritizes community participation. Her current art and research projects focus on community-led cartography and de-colonial approaches to participatory map-making. Before returning to the academy, Cara worked as an Associate & Senior Urban Planner at WXY Studio in NYC and BrookMcIlroy in Toronto. Her artwork and participatory workshops have been featured widely in New York City at MoMA PS1, La Mama Galleria, the New Museum, Creative Time (CTHQ), and with the design collective Intelligent Mischief. Cara holds a Master of Urban Planning from Harvard University and a bachelor’s degree in Art & Archeology and sculpture from Princeton University. In 2015, She co-founded and co-chaired the inaugural Black in Design conference with Courtney Sharpe and the Harvard GSD AASU.
