THE TRIENNIAL 2025

Lan Tuazon

Matters of Consequence, 2025

Steel, concrete, biolith tile, and recycled pressed plastic

Lan Tuazon creates architectural spaces that set new habits towards social and ecological customs. Using new techniques in material invention, Tuazon shifts our understanding of consumption and its by-products when wasted materials are reclaimed and redesigned for an extended use.

Matters of Consequence was inspired by a 15th-century painting of a “studiolo,” a private space for study and reflection. This artwork becomes a platform for conversation, workshops, and exchanging materials and ideas, a public place for practicing climate-conscious behavior. It also serves as a pedestal to honor the work of grassroots groups in Mattapan who are creating their own social systems through food access, health, and fitness.

The installation supports reflection on the impact of individual consumption and invites visitors into shared storytelling, “deep hanging out,” and survival strategies drawn from lived experience. Developed in partnership with Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition, the Urban Farming Institute, and Mattapan neighbors, the project celebrates the powerful alternatives that can emerge through collective action.

Collaboration is at the heart of the Triennial’s work. After receiving additional feedback from the Mattapan community, we will be relocating the installation currently installed at Almont Park. The Triennial is working closely with the City of Boston and the artist to identify a new location for the piece.
